Truckers say grocery stores are the worst

When Zipline Logistics surveyed employees from 150 freight forwarders across the country this Fall, with which companies they refuse to work, one type of retailer was named before the others: grocery stores.

The truckers said in the survey's zipline that grocery retailers like Kroger, Walmart, C & S Wholesale Grocers and Safeway need hours (sometimes even days) to unload their trucks and may not pay drivers for how long they are spend in their camps.

Truck drivers are particularly hampered by imprisonment because they are being held in warehouses waiting for the truck to be loaded or unloaded. The detention is a blow to the time of the drivers and how much they can earn on a given day.

What's so bad about grocery stores?

Andrew Lynch, co-founder and president of Zipline, said grocery stores were likely to get such a bad reputation in the survey because Zipline works mostly with grocery and retail businesses.

Lynch also said grocery stores have more complicated supply chains than other retailers. He explained:

If I bring in a truckload of product from a customer making sparkling water, that truckload could be 28 pallets and six flavors.

When this truckload arrives at the food distribution center, they pick up the pallets and then disassemble them to a localized distribution center or grocer. This may need to be broken down and then split into 150 more palettes.

As a result, workers in food stores are often thinly stretched. "It's not that these food stores are acting maliciously," Lynch said. "They work the way they need to work."

Fewer truck drivers are available for work, and this forces retailers to meet their needs.

According to a report from the American Trucking Association (ATA) from 2016, the US had around 36,500 drivers in 2016.

The continuing shortage of truck drivers this year intensified with the introduction of the electronic data capture terminal mandate to ensure that truck drivers do not drive more than 11 hours a day within 14 hours.

The law "has drastically reduced the flexibility that motorists can incorporate into their activities and exacerbates the constraints that reduce their operational efficiency," Lynch said.

Less trucking means that truck drivers in warehouses where truck time is wasted are increasingly able to fire the shots. Zipline stated in its survey that 77% of carriers have become more selective in the companies they are willing to work with.

Drew McElroy, CEO and co-founder of Transfix, Business Insider said the truckers would simply not shift the cargo for business if they did for the drivers are not hospitable.

"There are places from which trucking companies will not be picked up," McElroy said. "I do not care if you pay me twice what the guy on the other side pays me for, I just do not go there."

Large companies have been trying to become "senders of choice" this year. "Rich soda, snacks and rest areas for truckers."

But Lynch said everything was still limited to keeping prison time to a minimum.
