President Trump announced on Thursday that he is canceling a planned trip to Poland and will stay in the United States to monitor Hurricane Dorian, who is due to land in Florida or early next week Heading elsewhere on the east coast.
The President was to travel to Poland this weekend to attend a World War II commemoration ceremony. Instead, Vice President Pence will be traveling, Trump said.
"To make sure all of the federal government's resources are geared towards the incoming storm, I've decided to send our Vice President Mike Pence to Poland this weekend," said Trump in the White House's rose garden during an event that turned up focused on the new space command. "It's something very important for me to be here, the storm does indeed seem very, very big."
The official National Hurricane Forecast predicts that Dorian will reach Category 4 on Monday night, when he approaches the east coast of Florida.
The returning president of the G-7 summit in France earlier this week was never enthusiastic about the second trip abroad and had already cut it twice, the second half of the planned trip to Denmark He abruptly stopped earlier this month.
Then he seemed ready to cut back on the Polish trip and skip a planned visit to a Polish military base where US forces are serving alongside Polish forces, a US defense official told Trump's announcement Thursday
White House officials began discussing the cancellation of the entire trip earlier this week ren, said a person briefed on the discussions. And Trump has been repeatedly arguing over the coverage of his G7 travel in the media over the last few days .
"The G7 in France was so successful, and yet I came back and read the Corrupt and Fake News, and watched a lot of networks, it was not even clear what actually happened at the G7 Grand Prix! " tweeted Tuesday.
Trump said on Thursday he had informed Polish President Andrzej Duda of the change in plans and had communicated to him "my warmest wishes and the wishes of the American people".
"Our highest priority is the safety of the people on the path of the hurricane, and I will reschedule my journey." Poland in the near future, "said Trump.
Federal instructions, it will be a huge hurricane, perhaps at e of the greatest! ", he said.
Trump owns several properties on the east coast of Florida, including his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach and three golf courses in West Palm Beach, Jupiter and Doral, west of Miami. In September 2017, Mar-a-Lago, along with the rest of the island of Palm Beach, was called on to evacuate Hurricane Irma.
Pence, who now occupies Trump's place, traveled to Poland in February. Duda had last visited the White House in June when Trump announced that the US would send 1,000 soldiers to Poland, and caused a generous welcome for Duda, which included an F-35 overpass, from which the two leaders and her life was considered the South Lawn.
Trump and Duda said in a joint statement during this visit that the United States would establish a small forward command center for hundreds of American forces in Poland as well as combat training centers throughout the Central European country. In return, Poland would pay for these facilities.
Trump has found a natural ally in Duda, the right-wing leader of Poland, whom Trump has repeatedly praised, especially as the nation meets NATO's defense spending commitments, while other countries like Germany are short-circuiting. Trump said during Duda's visit in June that he had a "very warm feeling for Poland" and Duda had established a permanent US base in Poland, which the Polish leader said was called "Fort Trump".
