President Trump presents the Medal of Honor Wednesday to Sgt. Major John L. Canley, a retired member of the US Marine Corps, on Wednesday.
Canley was honored for his efforts during the Vietnam War of 1968, when he repeatedly hurried across dangerous terrain to rescue his injured comrades, even though he himself had wounds. When his commanding officer was severely wounded, Canley took the lead and led his comrades.
Mr. Trump has emphasized that he has honored military members who sacrifice for the country, and reiterated his commitment to defense spending and to veterans and their families.
Last week, however, the president proposed that MP Devin Nunes, a controversial conservative in Congress who directs the House's intelligence committee, should receive the Medal of Honor to defend him in the Russia investigation. The President revised that to say that perhaps it should be called the Medal of Freedom.
