Trump stops trade negotiations with Turkey and raises steel tariffs to 50%

Statement by President Donald J. Trump on Turkey's action in northeastern Syria

I will shortly be issuing an executive order to impose sanctions on current and former officials of the Turkish government and on those who are destabilizing Measures of Turkey, approved in northeastern Syria. Likewise, the steel tariffs will be raised again to 50 percent, which corresponds to the level before the reduction in May. The United States will also immediately stop the trade ministry negotiations for a $ 100 billion trade agreement with Turkey.

This Regulation will allow the United States to impose powerful additional sanctions on those involved in it. Serious human rights abuses, ceasefire arrest, preventing the return of displaced persons home, forced return of refugees or threats to peace, security or stability in Syria. The Order will approve a wide range of consequences, including financial sanctions, the blocking of property and the exclusion of entry into the United States.

Since my first day in office, the Trump Administration has worked tirelessly to ensure the security and protection of the United States and its citizens. The United States and our partners have freed 1

00 percent of the reckless territorial caliphate from ISIS. Turkey should not risk these gains. Turkey must also give priority to the protection of the civilian population, in particular the vulnerable ethnic and religious minorities in northeastern Syria. Indiscriminate action against civilians, destruction of civil infrastructure, and crackdown on ethnic or religious minorities is unacceptable. In addition, the return of the refugees must be done in a safe, voluntary and dignified manner.

Turkey's military offensive threatens the civilian population and endangers peace, security and stability in the region. President Erdogan has made it completely clear to me: Turkey's action is triggering a humanitarian crisis and creating conditions for possible war crimes. Turkey must ensure the safety of the civilian population, including religious and ethnic minorities, and is now or in the future responsible for the continued detention of ISIS terrorists in the region. Unfortunately, Turkey does not seem to mitigate the humanitarian impact of its invasion.

As I said, I am withdrawing the remaining US soldiers from northeastern Syria. After US forces have defeated the physical ISIS caliphate, US troops coming from Syria will now reposition themselves and remain in the region to monitor the situation and prevent a repeat of 2014, as the neglected threat of ISIS raged in Syria and Iraq. A small part of the United States armed forces will remain in Tanf Garrison in southern Syria to continue destroying the remnants of the IS.

The United States will use aggressive economic sanctions to target those who facilitate, facilitate and finance these heinous acts in Syria. I am fully prepared to quickly destroy the Turkish economy if the Turkish leadership continues this dangerous and destructive path.
