Tua Tagovailoa injury: Alabama QB is out of action for the remainder of the season

Tua Tagovailoa's health was an important pre-Alabama game on Saturday night in Mississippi, but his injured ankle was his crew's least problem as the half-time drew nearer. Tagovailoa had dislocated his right hip in the second quarter and was knocked off after a 38-7 win. He will miss the rest of the 2019 season, but is expected to fully recover.

"Tua Tagovailoa suffered a right-sided hip dislocation that was immediately reduced in the stadium and is undergoing further testing to determine the best course of treatment, and is expected to fully recover but miss the rest of the season," explained Dr. Lyle Cain, orthopedist in Alabama, in a statement released by the team.

Aaron Suttles of The Athletic further reports that Tagovailoa also suffered a rear wall fracture.

Tagovailoa was unable to strain the right side of his body after falling heavily to his right hip. According to Molly McGrath, a reporter for ESPN, he was removed from the car in the locker room and reportedly "screamed" in pain. Coaches also treated Tagovailoa for a bloody nose he had suffered when his face mask hit the lawn head-on. During a half-time interview, Saban noted that Tagovailoa had been injured in his final series of the match. "We wanted to train with him two minutes before halftime," Saban said.

Tagovailoa was immediately taken to a local hospital before he was flown by Tide Beat author Cecil Hurt by helicopter to the St. Vincent Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama.

Tagovailoa played well with the point and looked OK after surviving the 46-41 defeat last week against No. 1 LSU. At the time of his injury he was 14 out of 18 for 256 yards and two touchdowns. Alabama had a 35-7 lead with touchdowns on the top five and Saban made it clear that Tagovailoa was on the way to being taken out of the game.

Saban will undoubtedly receive a lot of questions about the decision to play Tagovailoa. – in general, and especially so late in the second quarter given the score.

Mac Jones played the rest of the way for the Crimson Tide, finishing the 7-of-11 pass for 94 yards. Previously, he had a season start against Arkansas, as Tagovailoa initially could not play because of his ankle sprain. Jones was solid against the Razorbacks, passing 18 by 22 for 235 yards and three touchdowns. Jones was an option to start against the Bulldogs on Saturday, with Tagovailoa making a decision at the time of the game.
