PARIS – Two French pilots who mysteriously fled the Dominican Republic in 2015 are being charged in the south of France for international cocaine smuggling.
Pascal Jean Fauret and Bruno Odos are among the nine defendants commencing proceedings in Aix-en-Provence on Monday
The circumstances of their escape to avoid 20-year prison sentences in the Dominican Republic, with the help of a French extreme right-wing MP European Parliament and a recognized aviation expert remains unclear. The French media report that they sailed to the French Caribbean island of Saint Martin.
The French government denied any involvement in the escape.
The two men were first arrested in 2013 in an airport in the Dominican Republic. Authorities said the plane they were piloting carried 26 suitcases of cocaine. You have denied wrongdoing.
