Two Minute Exercise: Ryan Day Breaks Spring Practice # 1

COLUMBUS head coach of Ohio, Ryan Day, spoke to reporters after Buckeyes' first spring training on Wednesday morning. He provided some staff updates and talked about the first day of practice. Here are the highlights of what has been said.

+ The offensive line does not bring back much starting experience, but there are people who played. Wyatt Davis, who played last year, was huge. Branden Bowen's return is great.

+ Jonah Jackson will provide depth when he comes here. Branden Bowen is now ready to play and had a good off season. His leadership is important too. "We will need him to reinforce himself."

+ Josh Myers was ready to play in the middle of the section and move Michael Jordan to the left guard last year if necessary. That's a great opportunity for him now. He will still have to apply for the job.

+ "We need to find out who the boys can rely on."

+ Nowadays only things are usually installed. No pads.

+ "It's going to be a fight" in quarterback. This is a progress to the start. You'll break up the reps at quarterback evenly. It was a good start today. The boys are still learning the offense. Justin Fields is a fast learner and a sharp guy. He did a good job in the meetings.

+ The defense was really on the ball today. Good energy. They are very serious and have a chip on their shoulders, which is great.

+ Brendon White can do a number of different things. They assess what they have in defense and then adapt those skills to a working system.

+ Day does not prefer to know who the quarterback is at the end of spring. That does not have to happen. "You just do not know how it will turn out." It is not good to think ahead because anything can happen and it is a long journey.

+ Day said the QBs did well today. They sailed a bit, but there was always something going on the first day. In the course of practice it got better. "I was pretty encouraged for the first day."

+ The infrastructure and the culture here are what it is. It's time tested and he believes in it. But along the way there will be changes here and there, and those changes will add up, but he will not change things just to change things and say, "This is mine."

+ It was a big deal to change the defense, so if you look at Day's footprint in this program, this is an area to start with.

+ The defensive change came about because Day saw a lot of speed on this team and wanted more on the field. It also gives them the ability to attack, but he also wants to keep things simple for the players. The more speed you have on the field, the more you force a defense to take the stuff underneath, and your urges become more difficult.

+ This group of players has a good cause, good energy and today was a good start. But they are still looking for leadership skills.

+ Day lives and feels that he knows where he has to be as a head coach. He will continue to be with the special teams, but will step in at quarterback meetings and exercises. He will trust the defense to do their job. Being in special teams allows him to see the defensive players.

+ Day tends to call games this season, but "lets the guys do it this spring." He'll see how he does it this year and from there

+ Zach Harrison had a really good off season. Garrett Wilson stands out because he's so smooth. Marcus Crowley has a real chance. Ryan Jacoby has done a good job. It's a good group, but we'll see how it works with pads.

+ Leadership is # 1

he's looking for from his quarterback. Taking care of the ball and having the ability to move the ball down the field is also great. The ability to hit you hard with your feet is great. Picking up third downs is great. It's about moving the ball down and leading your team.

+ "I thought all quarterbacks worked well." It's hard to guide the first time you do something that involves all quarterbacks doing their first exercise. "None of these guys really does have a great job." That should change in the middle of the camp.

+ Quarterbacks could be temporarily in the middle of this year. They always try to be up to date on the offensive, and they will do something this spring.

+ The club with 2,000 repetitions remains. "They will not win games in the spring." There is so much money in the players that they have to make sure they bring the players down.

+ JK Dobbins "is back now." Dobbins was looking for home runs last year because he wanted to make the most of his work while wearing his pieces. Its scope will increase this year and you have to find someone behind who can help. You do not need to know more about Dobbins than they already do. They will not let him out of control this spring.

+ Jordan Fuller will not train. It is a problem of the lower extremity. Thayer Munford goes through a consultation. Demario McCall, Taron Vincent and Jerron Cage have some nagging injuries that should be well suited when they return from the spring break.

+ Day did not have any information about the scholarship numbers.

+ He is looking for Baron Browning Get in and have a nice spring. They try to find out where he fits best in this scheme. He is very, very talented. "Hopefully we can get this click this spring and he can win a job."

+ He does not know exactly how his linebackers will look this season. They have depth and versatility. You can agree with the staff, "but first we have to find out who can do that."
