Two-year-old cancer patient needs rare blood to survive

She fought cancer, and to survive, she'll probably need blood transfusions from 7 to 10 donors, not all of them found yet.

That's because they are as rare as they are. [19659003] Only persons of Pakistani, Indian or Iranian descent who have the same blood type as Zainab, whose family comes from Pakistan, are likely to agree with her. According to OneBlood, a non-profit organization in South Florida that helps to find donors around the world for the young girl, fewer than 4% of people in these populations can match.

"We Have a Zero Percent Chance" Looking around pretty much every other ethnic group, we find compatible blood for this little girl, "said Frieda Bright, laboratory manager at OneBlood, in a video provided by the organization. "We're looking for the world to try to find blood for this little girl."

According to OneBlood, it will ideally be possible to find donors to these US-based ethnic groups.

Such donors are "extremely rare," said Sandra Nance, senior director of the American Rare Donor Program.

Nance said the program is pursuing at least ns 59 species of rare blood and has over 120,000 registered donors. She said that not a single donor matching Zainab's blood type was registered in the program's US database when the search for suitable donors began in September. According to OneBlood, two compatible donors have since been found in the US and one in the UK.

"Luckily, they found three donors and so far they have been through their normal treatment." Her father, Raheel Mughal, said in a video provided by OneBlood. "We will definitely need more blood."

Zainab's family shot the video with OneBlood to draw attention to their story. They could not speak directly to CNN.

Zainabs cancer, the neuroblastoma, developed in its nerve cells and requires chemotherapy for treatment.

"It needs to be fully supported by blood donations to survive cancer treatment to kill this cancer," Bright said. "The blood will not cure her, but the blood is very, very important to support her while undergoing a specific cancer."

Rare blood is found in less than one in every thousand people, and extremely rare can be blood According to the American Rare Donor Program, even fewer people are affected. The program, a collaboration between the American Red Cross and AABB, formerly known as the American Association of Blood Banks, is working with OneBlood to obtain more rare blood for Zainab.

"Rare blood is the blood you do not have when you need it, no matter what," Nance said. "If a person has been identified as a rare donor and asked to give, I hope she will donate if they can."

In OneBlood video, Mughal made a call for those who can help. "If you belong to the people of the Middle East, please go out and donate blood for my daughter," he said. "The life of my daughter is very dependent on the blood."
