Detroit Red Wings striker Tyler Bertuzzi was suspended for two games by the NHL over "unsportsmanlike behavior and scouring on Colorado Avalanche striker Matt Calvert," the league announced today.
Bertuzzi hit a board on Calvert's banks a crush on the boards in Colorado's 2-0 victory at Little Caesars Arena.
Bertuzzi will miss the home game on Tuesday against Tampa Bay and Thursday's game in Toronto. He will return for the game on Saturday against the New York Islanders in LCA.
Calvert carried the puck ice on the boards near the Red Wings bench when he was checked by Mike Green in the third hour. This resulted in Calvert's stick landing on the Red Wings bench (see video in Tweet below).
"Several Red Wings players, including Bertuzzi, are attacking the stick to keep Calvert from playing again." NHL Player Safety said in a video to explain the decision. Calvert turns and grabs the bench to release his stick by first pulling it and then pressing it. Then he is grabbed by Bertuzzi and Red Wings striker Dylan Larkin. Larkin pulls Calvert further into the bench as Bertuzzi tries to tie Calvert with his gloves. While Calvert is fully occupied with Larkin, Bertuzzi gets up, takes off his glove and hits Calvert with a strong blow on the head.
It was a Chippy game involving battles between Bertuzzi and Ian Cole, as well as Detroit's Anthony Mantha and Patrik Nemeth.
There were no penalties as a result of this incident.
