A recent review of six studies involving more than 96,000 people – 5,000 of whom have already had type 2 diabetes ̵
Meta-analysis published by German researchers last month The Journal of Nutrition found that the risk of developing type 2 diabetes increased 6 percent after only one day of breakfast per week. The risk increased with each additional day of skipped breakfast and reached a 55 percent higher risk for four to five days to skip the morning meals per week.

The researchers found that the association was only partially mediated by the body mass index, suggesting that individuals of varying weights could be at increased risk for skipping breakfast.
More than 30 million Americans (or one in ten) suffer from diabetes. The majority (90 to 95 percent) suffer from type 2 diabetes caused by insulin resistance in the body. Without insulin, the body's blood sugar levels can reach dangerously high levels and contribute to other serious health problems such as heart disease, vision problems, and kidney disease, according to Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The timing and frequency of meals had also previously been linked to blood glucose levels, insulin resistance, and decreased insulin sensitivity, said Columbia University's Professor Marie-Pierre St-Onge last year in a statement for the American Heart Association.
"Studies have shown that people who eat breakfast daily have less cholesterol and blood pressure, and those who skip breakfast – about 20 to 30 percent of US adults – are more likely to be obese, have an inadequate diet. Show evidence of impaired glucose metabolism or be diagnosed with diabetes, "she wrote.
Another study from last year found that refusing breakfast contributes to "impaired metabolism".

When people in the small study failed to eat breakfast, the researchers found that their bodies shattered more of their stored fat stores, which is a good thing for those who want to lose weight. This chronic inflammation is known to affect insulin sensitivity and may increase the risk of insulin obesity and type 2 diabetes.
According to the American Diabetes Association, people with diabetes should strive for a balanced meal of fruit, whole grains, nuts, eggs, dairy and vegetables, avoiding fiber or sugar-added foods and processed meats in the morning.
