Abortion rates have fallen to their lowest level since the procedure for termination of pregnancy was legalized in a 1

973 Supreme Court decision, according to a new report. But experts say the reason for the decline may be hard to isolate.

The study published Wednesday by the Guttmacher Institute – a research organization that supports access to abortion – has decreased by 7% between 2014 and 2017.

In 2017 According to the group, nearly 200,000 abortions were performed, nearly 200,000 fewer than in 2011, compared to 1.6 million in 1990.

Despite nearly ten years of efforts by the From conservative state and county politicians to restrict access to abortion, Mr. Guttmacher's decline is not necessarily related to new laws.

Improving health care

The authors of the Guttmacher report – periodically compiled from surveys of hospitals and abortion clinics – found that the decrease may be due to better access to contraception and the improvement of contraceptive devices for women.

Intrauterine Devices and Implants have improved over the last decade and are increasingly covered by insurance companies because of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) of 2009, also known as Obamacare.

Elizabeth Nash, policy director of the Guttmacher Institute, indicates that with other local legislation, increased access to birth control.

She warned that the report indicated the national average, but did not tell individual stories. For example, although the average distance traveled by women for an abortion in 2014 is 55 km, some women were forced to travel much further for the same procedure.

"Some people travel hundreds of kilometers while others live in cities where they can take the bus or train," she says.

Abortions at home

Women turn also towards medical abortion at home rather than to surgery, the report says, noting that 95% of documented procedures are still performed in specialized clinics.

Abortions performed outside of a clinic are more difficult or impossible to follow, and could help explain the decline.

Medical abortions, which use the so-called abortion pill accounted for 39% of abortions in 2017, compared to 20% in 2014.

In 2017, nearly four out of 10 abortions were performed with abortion pills instead of a surgical procedure.

Strengthening legal restrictions

Between 2011 and 2017, 32 states adopted a total of 394 new restrictions on abortion. Some of the most severe restrictions so far have been adopted by conservative states in 2018, following Guttmacher's latest investigation, but many of these restrictions have been temporarily blocked by the courts.

Advocates of anti-abortion hailed the drop in the rate. evidence that regional laws prevent abortion.

"I think they have an impact," says Laura Echevarria of the National Committee on the Right to Life who is opposed to abortion. "If that does not have a huge impact, then why are all the actors in the abortion industry angry every time a law is passed?"

Ms. Nash from Guttmacher stated that, if the regional restrictions " certainly play a role "in lowering national rates," the numbers do not tell any history ".

"The abortion rate, which it decreases or that it increases, is not really an indicator of access. is thinking about what abortion services look like for each person and whether they are affordable or not and available. "

Some states that have adopted abortion restrictions between 2014 and 2017 actually saw an increase in their abortion rate. And in several states that have opened new clinics, abortion rates have declined. Overall, the United States has seen a net gain in abortion clinics over the three years covered by the report – however, several clinics have been closed since 2017.

birthrate

Women choose to have fewer children and the birth rate of the United States to according to US government data released last year, their lowest level since 1987.

The birth rate – the number of births per thousand – and fertility – an average forecast for life – have fallen to their lowest level in 30 years, according to the 2018 Report.

American researchers, the decrease in the number of births is partly attributable to a greater number of women seeking higher education and employment.

Other possible explanations include changing societal expectations, increased access to contraception, and limited supply for parents.

Increased awareness of pregnancy

Anti-abortion groups such as the National Right to Life Committee Guttmacher data are accurate, due to close relationships with many abortion providers.

"The efforts of the pro-life movement to educate Americans about the humanity of the unborn child and to enact pro-life protective legislation have an impact," says the NRLC president, Carol Tobias.

"Knowledge of what is happening in the womb" has become the norm, said a spokesperson for NRLC Laura Echevarria, highlighting a recent announcement in the Super Bowl showing the ultrasound of 39, an unborn child eager for snacks and snacks.
