The drug company Allergan issued a nationwide recall on Tuesday for nearly 170,000 sample birth control kits by Taytulla after a packaging failure resulted in the tablets being put in the wrong order, which could lead to unwanted pregnancies. 19659003] The botched packs have placebo pills, where active pills should be, Allergan said in a statement. The 28-pills pack should have 24 pink pills with hormones followed by the four brown capsules that have no hormones, the company said. However, in the recalled packs placebos are at the beginning of the treatment. Taking placebos still allows women to temporarily experience bleeding.
"Undoing the order is not visible to new users or previous users of the product, which increases the likelihood that the capsules will be taken out of service," the company said. "If patients are concerned about the possibility of accidental pregnancy, they should consult their doctor."
The lack of one day of oral contraceptive may, according to Mayo Clinic, put women at higher risk for pregnancy. For birth control pills to be effective, they must be taken at the same time each day.
The affected lot has been shipped to healthcare providers in the US, and the sample packs have been in circulation since August. Allergan said it had been alerted to the problem through a medical report and had initiated a voluntary recall. Customers are informed by letter about the recall, and the company advised people who have the faulty packs to contact their doctors to arrange returns.
Only one batch of sample packs had misplaced pills, said Allergan STAT News.
"The investigation was completed at the packaging site," the company said. "Given the nature of the problem, inspections and inspections on the packaging line, the recall is limited to one batch of Taytulla, at which time no other units were identified with the defect within the batch or within any other Taytulla lot."
Allergan said it had not heard of inadvertent pregnancies from the faulty packaging, the Wall Street Journal reported. But the recall notice still had some people who feared the worst.
