United aircraft engine catches fire during flight from Newark to Bush Airport in Houston, Texas

HOUSTON, Texas – It was an eerie flight for passengers in a United Airlines plane when they landed at Bush Intercontinental Airport after the engine caught fire.

Flight # 1168 came from Newark when officials said the engine was on fire before arriving in Houston just before 10:30 pm.

Several passengers described the moments when they noticed something was wrong during the flight.

"I noticed when we arrived in Houston, I heard noises that I normally do not hear when I fly," said passenger Leonard Weiner.

Weiner said the captain got on the plane and told everyone to evacuate it.

Chris Morrison said he was dozing when he suddenly heard a loud bang that woke him up. He said he saw a flash of light from the window.

"People were starting to panic, and everyone kept pressing the flight attendant's call button," Morrison said.

Passengers jumped out of the plane on emergency slides and stayed on the tarmac for about half an hour before being sent to the United Club.

United Airlines issued a statement on Eyewitness News about the incident: "United Flight 1

168 from Newark, New Jersey to Houston had a problem with one of the engines shortly before landing Customers Safe The aircraft was evacuated and brought to the terminal, local authorities responded promptly and our maintenance team is currently inspecting the aircraft. "

No injuries reported.

An investigation is in progress.
