The airline estimates that around 2,400 flights will be canceled in June and July, much of the busy summer travel season.
"We will only put our customers and employees in this plane if the regulators judge for themselves it is safe to do so," United said in a statement. The company added that it will continue to try to automatically rebook affected customers on other flights.
United said in April that it will cancel all flights until "early July" due to the Boeing 737 Max foundation. The last extension is until the 3rd of August.
The airline joins other US carriers – American Airlines and Southwest Airlines – which canceled 7,337 Max flights until August. Boeing's Max aircraft were taken out of the sky in March after a 737 Max jet, flown by Ethiopian Airlines pilots crashed in that land and killed everyone aboard. It was the second fatal accident with a max in recent months. In the two crashes, a total of 346 people were killed.
It is still not clear when the authorities will let the plane fly again.
Daniel Elwell, incumbent administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration, said this week that the agency had not committed to a timetable for Max's recertification, although some airlines had hoped the flight restriction would be lifted by August.
] The FAA continues to review the aircraft's prior certification and its software system, which pushes the nose of the aircraft down when it detects an imminent deadlock, and is believed to have played a role in both crashes.
The FAA met with delegates from 33 international aviation authorities on Thursday in Fort Worth, Texas, to discuss the software fix verification processes that Boeing has completed for the aircraft that continues to hit the ground worldwide.
Boeing ( BA ) did not respond immediately to a request for comment.
United ( UAL )
was forced to cancel about 30-40 flights per day while supervisors continue. It needs to be checked whether the aircraft is flight safe. United does not fly Max 8 jets, the type of aircraft involved in both of these deadly incidents. But it has 1
4 max 9s, which is a slightly longer version of the Max 8.
Other US airlines have even more max aircraft in their fleet. Southwest ( LUV ) of the 34 Max Jets flies, has already canceled all Max flights until August 5. American ( AAL ) which has 24 of the planes said last month it would cancel about 115 daily flights until August 19th.
