Negotiations between US Steel and United Steelworkers continue at 23:59 despite the planned contract expiration.
In a statement, US Steel said they had agreed with the union leaders to continue the collective bargaining agreement after the deadline, and all corporate facilities would continue to operate.
"We believe (the expansion) is in the best interests of our employees, customers, shareholders and other stakeholders," US Steel said in a statement.
Channel 11 turned to the United Steelworkers, who tell us that they still hope for a fair solution. They also showed us the latest information they sent to their members.
They say that US Steel asks for compromise or exception in a long list of questions. In a six-year deal, the company has offered bonuses and pay raises for the first three years that seem meaningful to them, which are actually the profit-sharing union members that have already earned.
They also say the company is calling for cuts to their current healthcare program, seeking to eliminate the 40-hour guarantee and require employees to work 32 hours as they see fit.
