According to Variety, Universal has acquired the rights to a series of classic Prince songs that are meant to lead through an original musical with a story inspired by these songs. So not a biopic, but a musical jukebox like Mamma Mia .
"But why do not we just do a musical biography about Prince?" Good question, imaginary reader! Variety says both Universal and Prince's estate were of the opinion that the angle was already well covered by Purple Rain of 1984, which … you know, fair enough. Hard to argue with.
But jukebox musicals are a funny thing. Sometimes they catch the zeitgeist, make the leap from the stage to the screen and finally enchant the pants of all ( Mamma Mia ). Other times they start like grotesque, harsh abominations and in the end they do not enjoy ( Rock of Ages ). It's hard to say which Universal camp could drop the planned Prince musical, but my instinct tells me that this is a very unwise idea. Of course, I'm there on the first day.
