US citizens heading to Mexico for an operation returned with deadly superbug / boing-boing

An alarming story in the Washington Post, stating that US citizens went to Mexico for a more affordable operation and then had a deadly microbial infection.

Tamika Capone believed she needed a trip to Mexico for a bariatric surgery. Her doctor had urged her to have a procedure to reduce her runaway weight and blood pressure. But her husband's health insurance would not cover the $ 17,500 dollars. After a friend received the operation in Tijuana for $ 4,000, Capone decided to do so. Nearly four months later, the Arkansas woman is one of at least a dozen US residents who returned from a surgery in Tijuana with a rare and potentially fatal bacterial strain that is resistant to virtually all antibiotics, federal health officials say. Some in the group recovered, but Capone, 40, remains seriously ill despite drug use.
