US groundhogs forecast during the polar vortex

P unxsutawney Phil has spoken. Spring is coming early.

Neither the famous Pennsylvania marmot nor New York-born Staten Island Chuck saw their shadows, Associated Press reports. Neither is her neighbor from New Jersey, Essex Ed, a resident of the Turtle Back Zoo.

According to legend, when a groundhog sees its shadow on February 2, six weeks ahead of winter weather.

Other marmots across the country joined their own predictions. In Milwaukee, Gordy the Groundhog agreed with his East Coast counterparts that spring will arrive sooner rather than later, Fox 6 reports. It was the first prediction for the 10-month-old groundhog living in Milwaukee County Zoo.

Ohio's Buckeye Chuck did not see much on Saturday morning and officially predicted an early spring there as well.

Also, Jimmy, the official four-legged forecaster in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, who predicted an early spring.

For many, this is good news as the Midwest coped with record low temperatures this week through a polar vortex. The weather phenomenon saw that Arctic air was trapped in the region and temperatures were well below zero in several states.

But there was at least one groundhog who had no good news for those who endured an unusual cold. In the Tennessee Aquarium Chattanooga Chuck did not offer a fair prognosis. More winter is on the way, he predicted.
