US says the Security Council approves new sanctions against NKorea

WASHINGTON ̵

1; The United States announced Friday that it has received UNSC support for a new package of sanction designations targeting North Korea smuggling at sea.

Ambassador Nikki Haley said that the North Korea Sanctions Committee, comprising all members of the United Nations Supreme Governing Body, unanimously approved the designations of 21 shipping companies, one individual and 27 vessels. She said it was the largest set of U. N. designations against the north.

"The adoption of this historic sanctions package is a clear sign that the international community is united in our efforts to maintain pressure on the North Korean regime," Haley said in a statement.

It comes despite a relaxation of tensions, because North Korea has set its nuclear and missile programs for four months and launched a diplomatic offensive. After his first trip abroad after the seizure of power six years ago, Kim Jong Un met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing this week and will meet with US and South Korean presidents this spring. [Tweet] In Tweets Wednesday, President Donald Trump said he was looking forward to meeting Kim, and he felt there was "a good chance" that the North Korean leader "is doing the right thing for his people and for humanity will". But "unfortunately, maximum sanctions and pressure must be maintained to cost!" Added Trump.

The new sanctions package aims to counter smuggling of North Korean ships, to extract oil and to sell coal. In doing so, they circumvent restrictions previously imposed by the Security Council to deprive the North of revenue and resources for its nuclear power and ballistic missile programs

For example, a United Nations designation requires that Member States access ports on the sanction list of ships deny access or deny access to individuals on the list [1 9659005] The identity of the new commissioners and their origins was not immediately clear, but Haley said the US had suggested that they be bundled with a US Treasury sanction package in late February, the US Persons prohibit trade in 50 ships and shipping companies and trading companies. Most of these targets were based in North Korea, but some were located in China – North Korea's main trading partner – Hong Kong, Singapore and Panama.

The diplomatic representations of China and North Korea at the United Nations did not respond immediately to calls and emails seeking a comment Friday

The British Mission said the UN accepted the designations, which they also called the greatest of all Times said, "our determination to put maximum pressure on the North Korean regime to ensure that talks are fully effective and irreversible denuclearization of the Korean peninsula."
