The Utes complete the year with a record of 23-12 overall record
Sedrick Barefield led Utah with 22 points to 8-of-11 total shooting and a 6-of-8 effort from the 3-point arc. He scored a career height in the game with six threes and scored his first 20-point goal since January 27th. Justin Bibbins scored 15 points and Tyler Rawson scored 11 points
Penn State led with five points in the half, 39-34, but took control of the game with a strong third quarter, outperforming the Utes, 24-14.
Lamar Stevens made the leap to the Nittany Lions with eleven of fifteen shots with 28 points, while Josh Reaves scored 18 points. Tony Carr added 15 points and 14 assists.
"They always watch the NIT and maybe they're thinking about the consolation prize or whatever," said Utah coach Larry Krystkowiak. "They have no idea how cool that was for us."
Penn State, who also won the NIT title in 2009, shot 55 percent from the field, of which 40 percent from the trio. The Utes made only 43 percent of their shots.
In his last college game, senior David Collette scored just four points and two rebounds in 13 minutes.
The 11,175 fans at Madison Square Garden were the most for a NIT final since 2005.
Utah has recorded at least 20 wins in a season for the fifth straight year, which included at least 23 wins in three of the last four seasons ,
