Virginia Democrats Make Historical Decisions for Speaker of the House of Representatives, Majority Leader
Filler-Corn, who is white, beat three other contenders, including a black woman from struggling downtown Virginia, Petersburg, and two men from Northern Virginia, one white and one black.
The Caucus has selected two other Northern Virginians – a black woman and a white man – to complete the leadership team.
Del. Charniele Herring (Alexandria) will be the first woman and the first African American to take the majority. And Del. Rip Sullivan (Fairfax) was elected chairman of the Caucus.
Members of the House Democratic Caucus, including those who won seats on Saturday but are sworn in in January, voted in favor of the three Richmond Hotel in a secret ballot. Filler-Corn was appointed spokeswoman on Saturday, but her election will not be formalized until the entire parliament convenes in January.
"We had a historic night on Tuesday and we had a historic day today," Filler-Corn said afterwards. She added that she looks forward to continuing to work for the issues and values that are so important to the Virginians.
This is an evolving story. It is being updated.
