The iPhone SE (Hands-On) approaching its third birthday soon was an amazing phone when it was released. It gave us a device with the timeless design of the iPhone 5s, with modern specifications borrowed from the iPhone 6s.
With the news that Apple had recently sold off a release split of the iPhone SE, it really brought me back to the thinking device. Are people crazy about buying an almost three-year, budget-conscious iPhone in 2019? Watch our hands-on video as I revisit the iPhone SE, breaking down its current strengths and weaknesses.

iPhone SE features that stand out today
] I think the iPhone 5-era design with square instead of rounded sides and refined bevelled edges is the pinnacle of Apple's design for its phones
The iPhone SE is also missing a camera that makes this possible The iPhone 6 has already been the staple food for the iPhone 6. The lack of camera relief allows for a completely smooth and closed cover, underscoring the overall beauty of the device.
It's such a timeless design that the iPad Pro takes on a similar look, however, with a camera back for the latest update. Needless to say, I would like to see a modern version of this design for the iPhone.

In a time of lumbering cell phones, Apple has gotten a freak out of trends with the iPhone SE, which blends modern (at that time) into a small, easy-to-use form factor. Apple has recognized in 2016 what it seems to have forgotten in the following years: Not everyone needs or likes huge phones like the iPhone XS Max.
With a 4-inch display, the iPhone SE easily fits in the hand or in a bag or handbag. In other words, this phone is super low key, which I definitely appreciate as a current user of the iPhone XS Max.
With the release of iOS 12, performance on Apple hardware generally improved older phones like the iPhone SE feel faster than before. The iPhone SE with its Apple A9 system on a chip and 2 GB of RAM still works well today. Remember, this is basically an iPhone 6s penned in the body of an iPhone 5s.
The iPhone SE is bundled with Touch ID, for which some people still have an affinity. In 2018, all new iPhone versions of Apple included the Face ID instead of the Touch ID. Although the iPhone SE is equipped with a first-generation Touch ID sensor, I think it's still good enough to deliver a seamless experience.
The iPhone SE was released in the spring of 2016, just months before the iPhone 7 was released without a headphone jack. The iPhone SE was the last iPhone Apple released with a headphone jack in tow, putting it on holy ground for some.
12 megapixel rear view camera
Same use 12 megapixel camera with f / 2.2 aperture from the iPhone 6s. The rear-facing camera in the iPhone SE is surprisingly good and still holds up relatively well today. It not only makes great photos, but also live photos like the iPhone 6s and newer devices.
Perhaps even more impressive is the fact that the camera found in the iPhone SE can record 4K video at 30 frames per second. SE entry-level models had only 16 GB of storage space, and 4K video takes up so much space, so this feature is often overlooked.
If you look at the specifications, the battery life for the iPhone SE is surprisingly decent compared to modern iPhones. The iPhone SE offers 13 hours of internet usage on LTE and 13 hours of video playback. To put this in perspective, the iPhone XS offers 12 hours of Internet usage and 14 hours of video playback. Taking into account other factors such as the talk time (14 hours vs. 20 hours), the iPhone XS starts better.
The 16GB iPhone SE began publishing at $ 399. Over time, however, Apple doubled its memory by giving up the low-end 16GB version for the same price. In terms of the budget phone, the $ 399 entry-level price for the iPhone SE was a much tastier option than the $ 749 iPhone XR. With a purchase price of $ 249 for the 32 GB model, the phone is almost in the impulse bucket category …
Should you have paid $ 249 to buy an iPhone SE during the Apple Clearance Sale? Nostalgia may have tempted you, but you should consider some of the more inferior aspects of iPhone SE before jumping off.
Returning to the iPhone as an iPhone XS Max user iPhone SE for the last week was very interesting. In terms of portability and hand comfort, this was a great experience, two big factors to be sure of, but this phone leaves much to be desired in in 2019.

The iPhone SE was great, but let's be honest, modern iPhones have …
Better, Bigger Displays
It's not just the displays on the newest iPhone Compared with the 4-inch display of the iPhone SE, it is so much bigger that modern iPhone displays are better . The massive 6.5-inch display of the iPhone XS Max is definitely eye-catching, but the quality of the display – resolution, contrast, viewing angle and wide color support – makes it something special.
19659002] Screen real estate is of course also a big differentiating factor – for example the iPhone XR and XS Max offer massive improvements of the screen space. This gives users access to more icon lines on the home screen, to larger videos, and more text on the screen as they read the Internet, books, and news.
The next obvious difference between the iPhone SE and modern iPhones is the camera quality. The iPhone SE's 12 megapixel camera with support for 4K video is not nearly so bad, but can not compete with the improvements in silicon and AI in Apple's latest hardware.
Apple's latest iPhones also feature 12-megapixel wide-angle cameras, but with significantly faster apertures of 1: 1.8 and faster sensors.
Although the iPhone XR lacks the dual rear camera array, all of Apple's latest smartphone versions have superb cameras with features that are simply not available on iPhone SE. Even the price-conscious iPhone XR with its single rear camera lens has larger pixels and features such as portrait mode for depth control in flight or post. There are also niceties like 4K60 video and 1080p-240 fps slow motion.
The front-facing camera, which was downright ridiculous on the iPhone SE, is also a big improvement over modern iPhones. The TrueDepth front camera on the latest iPhones is not only suitable for biometric authentication of face recognition, but also a 7 megapixel shooter that can record 1080p video at up to 60 frames per second. This is a remarkable upgrade of the 1.2 million megapixel camera that was migrated from iPhone 5s in 2013 to iPhone SE.
The recent iPhone versions have improved significantly in terms of sound quality, and much is attributed to having more room to move the sound. The iPhone SE has a single inferior speaker in the lower right corner of the headset, while the new iPhones have stereo speaker setups that are noticeably louder and clearer than those of the individual speakers on the iPhone SE.
iPhone SE Speakers Fade Compared to Newer iPhones
Because modern iPhones (and iPads) do not have a Home button, gesture controls are used for just about anything when it comes to interface Device. For example, swiping up from the bottom of the screen to return to the Home screen is more natural than pressing the Start button. The swipe with the swipe and hold feature feels like the App Switcher is more efficient to call
3D Touch debuted on the iPhone 6s, which is somewhat ironic, considering that the iPhone SE is essentially an iPhone 6s in an iPhone 5s body. Anyway, 3D Touch, based on special pressure-sensitive components, was not included in the iPhone SE.
This is an unannounced feature, but 3D Touch has a cult for those who appreciate what it brings to the table. Often referred to as a right-click for iOS devices, 3D Touch allows users to launch shortcuts directly from the Home screen and Peak-Pop to view and open content in supported apps.
3D Touch was not included in Apple's so-called budget flagship, the iPhone XR, which has undoubtedly led to rumors suggesting that Apple may abandon the feature in the future.
I was skeptical about Face ID first, but after working on the iPhone X for a year and enjoying the updated version of the iPhone XS Max, I am convinced that this is a better biometric Solution is as Touch ID. Touch ID had time and place, but it feels a bit old compared to Face ID. This means that the user does not have to do anything other than look at their phone so it can be unlocked and authenticated in apps.
Other Charging Capabilities
After Apple had charged numerous generations of iPhone without a wireless charging system, Apple finally jumped on board with the Qi standard for wireless charging with the release of the iPhone X. The iPhone also got access to faster USB PDP charging at the same time. In my review with the iPhone SE, this was one of the glaring differences, as I am used to sitting my iPhone in the house and in the car with various wireless chargers.
No iPhone SE wireless charging
Tap to wake up
One of the features I missed most during my time with the iPhone SE was typing to wake up , The feature, which debuted with Apple's first OLED phone, the iPhone X, is a convenient way to activate your iPhone by simply tapping on the screen. The iPhone SE, on the other hand, requires the user to press the physical home button or the standby button to activate the phone.
No tap-to-wake on iPhone SE, just raise-to-wake
The iPhone XS is in one with its 6-core Apple A12 Bionic chip completely different league represented in terms of performance. But for someone who is fine with the iPhone SE 2019, performance is probably not as important as other factors on this list.
This makes the A12 a massive improvement over the A9 in the iPhone SE. Such improvements are not only clear from games and benchmarks, but also allow for further improvements such. For example, real-time machine learning, augmented reality, etc.
As you may expect, graphics are also supported by a 4-enhanced GPU with Metal 2 support. There's also the machine's 8-core neural engine on-machine learning engine and an enhanced image signal processor that allows things like portrait mode and smart HDR for increased dynamic range in photos.
Should Apple create a modern iPhone SE?
In everything we've discussed in this post, there's an obvious question: should Apple release a modern version of iPhone SE? I personally think that all future phones should use a similar design language to the SE, but it's also a good idea to release an iPhone on a lower budget, inspired by the beloved iPhone SE.
Imagine a nearly bezel-free design that incorporates all the design elements of the iPhone 5s. This alone would allow a new iPhone SE to have much more room on the screen while maintaining a similar physical footprint.
Imagine for a second a camera similar to the iPhone XR, a faster A12 Bionic chip, an OLED display and features like Face ID and tapping to wake you up. This sounds like an iPhone that's hugely popular with those who do not like big phones.
The original iPhone SE was undoubtedly a great phone, but it's a phone that leaves much to be desired in 2019. The form factor trumps everything else, then it's an obvious choice, but if other factors are yours According to opinion, it would be hard to justify buying an iPhone SE in 2019, even at $ 249.
What do you think? Is iPhone SE worth it today? Should Apple release an updated version? Would you prefer a new iPhone in SE style as a budget model to the iPhone XR? Feel free to hear your thoughts and opinions below in the comments.
