Volcano erupts on the Italian island of Stromboli killing one person



ROME – A volcano on the Italian island of Stromboli erupted on Wednesday, triggering hot magma in a massive explosion, killing one person and surrounding the popular tourist destination with ashes.

Probably a tourist, was killed by falling stones during a hike, said an ambulance official. A second person was injured.

The Italian news agency ANSA says the explosion has brought about 30 tourists to safety.

The unexpected eruption set off fires on the western side of the small Mediterranean island north of Sicily, Italy. Firefighters were called up close, and a Canadair plane was already in use.

"We saw the explosion in the hotel and there was a loud roar," said Michela Favorito, who works in a hotel near Fico Grande on the east side of the island.

Fiona Carter, a British tourist on the island of Panarea, about 27 km from Stromboli, heard the explosion.

"We turned around and saw a mushroom cloud from Stromboli, everyone was shocked, then glowing lava ran down the hill towards the little village of Ginostra," she told Reuters, taller, white and gray. It enveloped Ginostra and now the cloud has completely covered Stromboli. Several boats went to Stromboli, "she added.

According to the geology.com website, Stromboli is one of the most active volcanoes on the planet and has been erupting almost continuously since 1932.

The island has become the last developed into a popular holiday destination for the rich and famous.
