AUSTIN (KXAN) – Walmart plans to hire more truck drivers and raise salaries for the drivers who already drive for the company.
The company hired more than 1,400 drivers in 2018 and currently employs around 8,000 drivers. Walmart plans to expand its fleet by another 900 drivers this year.
From February, the salaries of existing drivers will be increased. "An increase of a penny per mile and additional compensation for each arrival means that Walmart drivers now earn an average of $ 87,500 a year and an all-in fare of nearly 89 cents a mile," officials wrote. On the first day of employment, drivers are also offered benefits and other benefits.
The only catch is that they want experienced drivers. "To qualify for onboarding, drivers must already meet Walmart's high minimum standards for their private fleet drivers, which includes 30 months of experience over the last three years and a clean safety record," officials wrote.
In December, Business Insider reported that Walmart's rigorous truck driver selection process had eased due to a nationwide truck driver shortage. According to the report, workers who normally want to pursue a trucking career have gone into higher-paying job industries without the challenges of the job.
