Truscott's team used high-speed cameras to pick up elastomeric balls that jumped over a water tank. Water running occurs when elastic balls receive considerable speed at the first impacts, leaving the ball with a deformed, elongated shape ̵

This behavior is characterized by the fact that the ball moves almost parallel to the surface of the water, with the tip of the elongated shape dipping below the water surface with each rotation, while the shorter sides just pass over it, giving the impression that the ball is over the water surface is running.

"Although this was a long study, the newly discovered modes make it easier for us to imagine how to use the technology for practical applications such as water drones," said Truscott.

The team discovered that there are two different types of water. The first type skips every full turn once and the other twice every full turn. This distinction can be controlled with an equation that can predict the number of leaps that occur.
