West Nile-infected mosquitoes discovered in South Indiana, health officials say

The West Nile virus was discovered in South Indiana. According to the Floyd County Health Department, a nationwide mosquito repellent test detected a West Nile positive mosquito sample. The sample was found in New Albany this month. Floyd County has had West Nile-positive mosquitoes in the past, but this is the first positive sample for 2019. People who become infected with the virus may experience fever, headaches and body aches before recovering completely. In other cases, the virus can cause more serious illnesses and even death. Officials say residents should continue to take precautions to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes. Protective clothing such as long-sleeved shirts and pants are recommended and residents should avoid appearing late when the mosquitoes are most active. Homeowners should also look after grass and shrubs that can house insects during the day.
