What are the 8 Health Benefits of Drinking Alkaline Water?

Alkaline Water has been gaining a lot of popularity lately, but what exactly is it? It is basically regular drinking water, but with a higher pH level. From slowing down the aging process to reducing the risk of chronic diseases like cancer, many health claims have been made about alkaline water. However, beyond the small studies, more research is yet to be done to validate or disprove these health claims. Despite the lack of hard data, some people still believe it to be a miracle drink for the following 8 proposed health benefits.

1- Maintain an Optimal pH Balance

The most prominent benefit of drinking alkaline water is that it can neutralize the acid levels in your bloodstream which, in turn, can help maintain and restore your body’s optimal pH balance and prevent many health problems that occur due to acidosis. When your pH levels are in equilibrium, your different bodily functions can operate at their optimal levels, effectively delivering nutrients to your organs and getting rid of metabolic waste.

Alkaline water has superior hydrating properties as compared to regular drinking water, which can be especially beneficial for those to work out daily and require extra hydration to make up for the water lost during exercise. In a study measuring the hydration levels of 1

00 participants after performing a mild exercise routine, those who received alkaline water after the exercise reported a 6.3% decrease in blood viscosity levels vs. only a 3.36% decrease in those who received standard purified water. So what does this mean?

Blood viscosity measures the thickness of the blood. The lower the blood viscosity is, the better the blood will be able to flow. The participants who drank alkaline water  showed an improved blood flow which can increase oxygen delivery throughout the body and make you more hydrated. Scientifically speaking, this can be explained by the fact that alkaline water has fewer molecules than regular drinking water which makes it more readily absorbed by your cells, allowing your body to rehydrate more quickly.

We’re constantly exposed to free radicals and UV rays that speed up the aging process. The potent antioxidants found in alkaline water can help fight those free radicals and reduce the damage caused by the harmful sun rays. In one study, scientists reported that after drinking alkaline water for 3-6 months, participants with high blood pressure, diabetes, and high blood fats reported reduced blood pressure, lower blood sugar, and decreased cholesterol levels. However, the participants had different levels of blood viscosity at the start which could have affected the results, making the study unreliable.

Minerals such as potassium, calcium, and magnesium play a key role in the regulation of blood pressure.By increasing the mineral intake, drinking mineral-rich alkaline water is said to help lower blood pressure, especially in individuals who have trouble absorbing minerals. Additionally, the presumed ultra-hydrating properties of alkaline water are also said to regulate blood pressure if you’re dehydrated because dehydration increases blood viscosity.

8- Improved Digestion

Alkaline water can help maintain a healthy pH balance in the intestines, which is crucial for inhibiting the growth of parasites and other undesirable microorganisms that often lead to malnourishment and other health problems. Moreover, a balanced pH stimulates proper enzymes to break down the remaining food that hasn’t been broken down, contributing to improved digestion and a healthier digestive system

While the numerous health benefits of drinking alkaline water can be invaluable, it’s important to note that there isn’t enough evidence to either support or refute these health claims. However, even in the absence of significant data to prove that alkaline water is actually beneficial for your health, no harm  -that we know of- can come from drinking alkaline water, as long as you drink it in moderation. Just don’t expect it to be a magical ticket to better health. Lastly, you should keep in mind that drinking too much alkaline water can cause side effects including an upset stomach and indigestion
