The country music world mourns singer Charlie Daniels this week when the country and southern rock legend died of a stroke on July 6, 2020. He was 83 years old. Most people know Daniels for his hit with the Charlie Daniels band “The Devil Went Down to Georgia”, but he also had a lot of success outside of this song. Charlie Daniels had a great career in music
Daniels became a session musician after forming a band called Jaguars at age 21, which according to AllMusic never came out big. He eventually became an extremely successful violinist who played on several Bob Dylan albums.
In 1972, however, he founded the Charlie Daniels Band. Unlike the jaguars, this band really started. They first had a hit called “Uneasy Rider” in 1973 (which, according to Billboard, is actually only credited to Daniels).

In 1979 the band got a No. 1 hit when they came out with “The Devil Went Down to Georgia”.
“Sometimes it takes a long time to write a song,” Daniels told Billboard. “This particular song only came when I got the story and knew where I was going with it. I just followed him. “
The song eventually became the Country Music Association’s Single of the Year.
