WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum leaves Facebook due to privacy breaches – TechCrunch

"It's time for me to move on … I take a break to do things that I enjoy outside of technology, like collecting rare air-cooled Porsche, working on my cars and ultimate Frisbee," WhatsApp Co-founder, CEO and Facebook board member Jan Koum wrote today. The announcement followed shortly after the Washington Post reported that Koum was going through disagreements with Facebook management over WhatsApp user privacy and weak encryption. Koum obscured this motif in his note, which says, "I will still cheer for WhatsApp – only from the outside."

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg commented on Koum's Facebook post about his departure quickly, writing "Jan: I'll miss working so closely with you." I'm thankful for everything you've done to connect and for the world everything you've taught me, including encryption and their ability to take power out of centralized systems and put them back in the hands of humans, these values will always be at the heart of WhatsApp. "This comment continues, the idea to play down that Facebook has dissuaded Koum from eroding encryption.

It's currently unclear who will replace Koum as WhatsApps CEO and what will happen

Values misaligned

Koum sold WhatsApp 2014 for an unbelievable $ 19 billion on Facebook. But since then it has more than tripled its user count to 1.5 billion, so the price that turns messaging into a one-horse race looks like a bargain. But at the time, Koum and co-founder Brian Acton were assured that WhatsApp would not have to run ads or merge their data with Facebook. The same is true for regulators in Europe, where WhatsApp is the most popular.

One and a half years later, Facebook has pressured WhatsApp to change its terms of service and share users' phone numbers with its parent. This allows Facebook to reach those users with more accurate advertising, such as having companies upload phone numbers to reach those people through promotions. Facebook was eventually awarded $ 122 million by the European Union in 2017, a wretched sum for a company that generates more than $ 4 billion in profits per quarter.

But the supposed invasion of privacy by WhatsApp drove a wedge between Koum and the parent. Acton left Facebook in November and has since publicly supported the # Delete Facebook movement.

WashPo writes that Koum was also angered by Facebook executives, who urged a weakening of the end-to-end encryption of WhatsApp to facilitate his new WhatsApp For Business program. It's possible that multiple team members from a company might be incompatible with their WhatsApp account with strong encryption. Facebook wants to finally make money with WhatsApp by offering bonus services to large companies like airlines, e-commerce sites and banks that want to trade via the chat app.

Koum strongly criticized advertising in apps and once said to Forbes: "Dealing with ads is distressing … you do not make life better for anyone by: advertising works better. "He vowed to keep them away from WhatsApp. But last year, Facebook has provided display ads in the messenger inbox. Without Koum Facebook could try to expand these intrusive ads on WhatsApp.

The high-profile departure comes to a dangerous time for Facebook: The big F8 developer conference starts tomorrow, even though Facebook shuts down parts of its developer platform at the same time as repayment for the Cambridge Analytica scandal. In the meantime, Google is trying to improve its fragmented messaging strategy by focusing apps like Allo on a mobile-only alternative to SMS in Android Messages.

While the news feed made Facebook rich, it also made him a bad guy. Messaging has become the strongest solution thanks to the dual dominance of Messenger and WhatsApp. Considering that many users may not even know that WhatsApp is owned by Facebook, Koum's move away from political concerns is unlikely to change. But it's another point in a thick line that blends Facebook's business ambitions with its carefree approach to privacy.

n

n

Werte falsch ausgerichtet

n
