WhatsApp says users must be 16 or older to access the app in Europe

WhatsApp prohibits anyone under the age of 16 from using their app in Europe. It raises the age limit by three years, just as European privacy rules start on May 25, as discovered by Reuters .

If users in Europe log in to the app in the next few weeks, they are kindly requested to confirm their age upon acceptance of the new Terms of Use and an updated Privacy Policy. WhatsApp, which belongs to Facebook, has its own data policy. New changes have been made that go beyond raising the age limit, including the ability for users to download a copy of their WhatsApp data containing their contacts and blocked numbers.

Facebook's approach to comply with the new rules will instead ask its teenagers between the ages of 1

3 and 15 to obtain parental permission to disclose personal information on the platform. If they do not get permission, they will see a generic version of Facebook that is not customized based on their data.

In regions outside Europe, the minimum age for using WhatsApp is still 13. The European GDPR will compel companies to comply with user requests for personal data erasure and in the month before the enforcement of the rules – and in particular after Facebook's Data Breach of Cambridge Analytica – Tech Companies Reward Their Data Retention Policy.
