The move comes as the e-commerce retailer is confronted with potential tax burdens that it did not previously have to deal with.
Amazon made the decision on March 23, just six days before President Trump slipped a Twitter tirade over the company that sent AMZN to share. POTUS said that the retailer does not pay enough state and local sales taxes, which gives them an advantage over other retailers, thanks to its ability to sell items through the US Postal Service at a discount.
The lobbying firm in question is Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld a law firm that generates more lobby revenue than any other Washington citizen. On Friday, Amazon shared with Squire Patton Boggs a party that was familiar with the matter.
The online company instead hired Paul Brathwaite of Federal Street Strategies LLC and Josh Holly of Holly Strategies Inc. Both companies have worked as external lobbyists for other companies, including Airbnb Inc.
