Warning: Big spoilers ahead for the second episode of The Flash Season 5, called "Blocked."
The Flash breaks new ground with his newest super villain and his fans I had to wait until the second episode of the fifth season to see who he is and what he can do. Cicada was teased as a type of character who lost his family due to metahumans, and he was driven on a mission to destroy all metas with his own meta-skills. Now that "Blocked" has shown what Cicada can do, it is already clear that Cicada is the Super Villain The Flash .
First and foremost, Cicada is no racer. Admittedly, we already knew that Cicada would not be a Speedster in the fifth season, and technically we spent an entire season with a non-Speedster as the big mess, but The Flash relied on Speedstern a little too much to drive the story. While the show is actually called The Flash and focuses on the Scarlet Speedster, the show also had to mess up a lot in its fifth season and move away from super speed
By presenting a villain who does not is a Speedster and probably will not have the thinker's incredible technology to do almost anything The Flash can break new ground. We have not seen a villain like Cicada and we have not seen Barry and Co. try to fight a villain like Cicada. The Blitz needed something new for Season 5 and Cicada delivers. Score for a super villain who is no racer or anything!
Of course cicada has powers, and The lightning has only begun to reveal what he is capable of. What Blocked proves, however, is that Cicada is able to use the power of other metas with his lightning-shaped dagger. This ability allowed him to brutally kill Gridlock, stabbed Vanessa in the back and nearly killing Barry, Cisco and Vibe until Nora came to safety with a last minute.
This leads to a second reason Cicada is the villain The Blitz needs in the 5th season. As a supervillain with the ability to take away other powers of the metas, if only temporarily, since Barry and his friends had all their powers back by the end of the year The Episode – Cicada could force Team Flash to think outside the super-strong box.
The Flash explored what it looks like when a hero without superpowers stands against a super-powered villain in the first superclass Arrow -verse crossover. This first crossover event made Barry temporarily angry and Oliver had to use all his training and tricks as an arrow to subdue the Speedster without killing or killing him. Oliver did it, but Barry never had the same talents without powers.
Cicada as the new big villain could make Barry develop as a superhero and develop the ability to assert himself and defeat a terrible opponent with any of his speeding powers. His attempt to defeat Cicada went as well as one would expect from a man who generally does not have to rely on anything but superpowers. He certainly will not become an Oliver Queen, but he could adapt.
Team Flash will hopefully have to fight differently to defeat Cicada, and that's an exciting prospect for all the fans who watched from the start. Cicada's unique skills could also give Iris more. Apart from her temporary use as Speedster with her purple flash, Iris had to rely on her own mind to survive the worst of Central City.
Cicada could open the door for Iris to have a larger arch. After all, if Iris had not done her homework when Gridlock was murdered as a journalist, Team Flash might not have connected all the points about Cicada in "Blocked." As someone who had no superpowers for almost the entire run of the series, in Season 5 they could be a particularly helpful asset. Maybe Cicada's abilities can give her and Nora a reason to tie!
The Third Big Reason Why Cicada is the Badass The Flash needs in Season 5 that we already know a lot about him, and Nora's Cliffhanger, who provides her with information about Cicada that we should learn more about him in the next episode. The Flash does not risk fans, as the series showed in season three, when the Savitar revelation was pulled out for almost an entire season.
We saw Cicada in a mask with a dagger that emitted a spooky, insect-like sound and tried to kill Metas. We also saw him unmasking his job as a janitor, if only for a few moments. Nora clearly has some information from the future of Cicada. We have to wait to see if her information comes from her studies on The Flash or if she has some experience with Cicada. In any case, her perspective as a future girl means that research into Cicada must be different than in previous seasons.
The fact that Nora has already noticed changes to the timeline due to her presence in the past also means whatever information she shares are not necessarily set in stone, so the feeling of suspense and mystery is not is missing completely. Despite my many problems with the Flash 's handling – or maltreatment – of time travel in the hands of reckless speedsters, Barry's decision to allow Nora to get around could make the season in some more insecure fun way.
Basically, Cicada is a factor that neither we nor Team Flash have had to deal with over the years on The Flash and that can only be a good thing when a show reaches its fifth ranked season in the air. Hopefully the show will continue to deal with him in a way that is equally fascinating and scary. We have to wait. New episodes of The Flash Flight Tuesday night at 8 pm ET in The CW, before new episodes of Legends of Tomorrow coming soon into the TV series Fall.
