Why Elon Musk says leave will kill you

After the success of his early internet start-ups, Elon Musk became what everyone wanted in the late 1990s: a dot-com millionaire.

In 1999, Musk sold its first company, Zip2, to Compaq for approximately $ 300 million. After that, he launched X.com, which eventually became PayPal. In 2002, eBay bought PayPal for $ 1.5 billion.

In 2002 he founded SpaceX with an estimated value of $ 33 billion, and in 2003 Tesla with a current market capitalization of approximately $ 57 billion.

Although Musk had much success, he did not have much free time. In fact, according to Musk, "Holidays will kill you."

Why the aversion to vacations? It is partly due to the work. Musk told Recode Decode that he needed to work over 1

00 hours a week to successfully build his start-ups.

And not much has changed.

For example, in the Tesla factory, Musk slept in 2018, "I do not have time to go home and take a shower," he told Gayle King in "CBS This Morning." I think people should have trouble while the CEO as it is on vacation, "he said.

In addition to the ongoing work, Musk – who says he only tried to get undressed a few times – had such terrible luck when it comes to vacation.

In 2015 Musk said that in just over a decade, he has only started twice and been problematic on both occasions.

"In the last 12 years, I've just tried to take free weekly twice," he said on Danish television in 2015 The first time I took a week off, the Orbital Sciences rocket and Richard Branson's [Virgin Galactic] rocket exploded the same week.

"The second time I took a week off, my rocket exploded," Musk said. 19659002] "The lesson here is, do not take a week off."

Even before Musk tried to make his first adult vacation, his honeymoon with his first wife Justine in September 2000, he received bad professional news.

At the time, he was CEO of X.com, and company executives were not satisfied with his leadership. While Musk sat on the plane with Justine, executives sent a letter of confidence to the company's executive board urging Musk out as CEO and as a substitute for him, Peter Thiel. When Musk arrived for his honeymoon in Sydney, Australia, he immediately had to fly back to Palo Alto, California, according to the book "Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX and Finding a Fantastic Future" by Ashlee Vance.

But maybe Musk's most traumatic holiday experience came when he and Justine decided to spend another honeymoon in December.

Musk planned a two-week trip to Brazil and South Africa. In South Africa, musk got the most severe malaria. After two hospitals misdiagnosed him, he was "very close to dying," Musk said in "Elon Musk," before being treated properly in time.

"This is my lesson for the holidays," Musk said in the book. "Holidays will kill you."

Since Musk's catastrophic travels, he has reportedly spent at least two holidays, including one to Chile and one to Australia.
