The Wii U is a quintessential part of the Nintendo hardware palette, in favor of the newer and much more successful Nintendo Switch. But it's not quite dead and gone, as the company still releases occasional firmware updates. Like one this week in 2019.
The Nintendo support site does not yet list the update, but Nintendo Everything reports that the firmware update updates the system to version 5.5.4. The update does not specifically mention what it does, but it is likely to be "general system stability improvements and other minor adjustments to improve the user experience." This was the trend for Wii U updates since the last major feature enhancement in 201
It's not surprising that Nintendo has not paid much attention to the Wii U since launching the Nintendo Switch , Two years after the move, the newer system has nearly tripled Wii U hardware sales and nearly doubled software revenue. Nintendo has made a habit of republishing overlooked Wii U games on the Nintendo Switch, including Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker.
Even third parties have moved on. Although the still massive base of 100 million installations for the Wii still strangely attracts attention, where this is not the case with the Wii U. For example, Ubisoft's Just Dance 2020 is for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Wii.
