To try to keep up with the popular features of some younger competitors, Webex from Cisco has introduced virtual backgrounds for its video conferencing. Users can either apply a blur effect to mask their background or replace it with one of Webex’s default background images.
With Zoom, currently the most popular video conferencing app, and competitors Google Meet and Microsoft Teams, users can upload their own custom images for background viewing.
Webex is one of the oldest players in video conferencing. It was founded in 1995 and acquired by Cisco in 2007 for $ 3.2 billion. It is mainly used as a business application and focuses more on companies than on private customers. However, it has expanded the functionality of its freemium version during the currently growing demand for remote meetings.

Like its competitors, Webex has seen a sharp increase in usage during the coronavirus pandemic as more people work and go to school. The company announced in April that it had tripled the average number of meeting minutes to 25 billion.
