Woman says American Airlines mistreated her for "flying while fat and black"

"No matter how you feel about my body and where it should be, I do not deserve the police calling me "Phillips said in a social media post.

An American Airlines passenger claims a flight attendant handed her over to the US police for flying "fat and black".

Amber Phillips, a 28-year-old writer and co-host of Podcasts Black Joy Mixtape said the police were called to Washington DC during the short flight from North Carolina because a white woman was uncomfortable felt next to her, Vice News reported.

"Because of the overlap of my identity, a black woman occupying space, my life might look like that just because I dare exist," Phillips said.

She said that there was an immediate tension between her and the passenger sitting next to her, and they soon began arguing.

In a Social Media Post said Phillips: "This white woman literally spent an active scene in the entire 45-minute flight because my arm touched hers, asking if I could move in such a small space, so small that all carry-on items would have to be cleaned. It was awful! "

After landing, Phillips said she took a picture and a video of where they were sitting to show how small the seats were.

This caused her neighbor to complain to a flight attendant that she was being harassed, Phillips said.

She was in a shuttle bus to the airport when a guard told her to get out and say, "I'm calling security, I'm calling the police, and this bus is not moving."

An officer who had previously spoken with her seated neighbor told her he was going to investigate her for assault, Phillips said, noting that he was asked for identification, but never a statement.

American Airlines reported Vice News that the flight attendant called the police on behalf of Phillips & # 39; Seat Neighbors after getting into an altercation.

"After landing in DCA shortly after 8 pm ET [Eastern Time]one of the passengers asked to be taken away from the plane because of the ongoing conflict," the airline said.

"The Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority Police Department was called to help and remove both passengers and we take discrimination very seriously and continue to investigate the details of this situation."

The Washington police said, "There were no arrests, no charges, and both passengers continued on their way."

Last October, the National Coloring Association (NAACP) issued a travel advisory service warning black travelers against flying with American Airlines, alleging multiple alleged racial discrimination on several occasions.

Vice News said it was unable to reach Phillips & # 39; s seat neighbor.
