RICHMOND: You'll need to know that on Sunday, August 12, four days before the Washington Redskins line up the jets in their second preseason game.
The Redskins pass from their preseason opener and the loss of Derrius Guice to an ACL violation. Their series of jetting practices begins today, and Jay Gruden looks forward to the opportunity for his team to be well prepared against players from another team. Call it preseason game 1-B.
One of the reasons why Gruden kept all the offensive drivers and most of the first-team defense in New England was that he thought he could get the starters some work against the jets.
"We will do a good job with our there," Gruden said after the game against the Patriots. "I want everyone to be healthy and fresh and then obviously we have the second game with them, so we really have a bonus period with the Jets exercises."
So Gruden did not want his starters against the Patriots play to save them for the jets. I'm not sure how the starters are "fresh" for six to ten games less than three days later, but there you go.
They've begun to figure out what they'll do if Guice leaves for the year yesterday, and that will continue throughout the season. It seems likely that Rob Kelly and Samaje Perine will be competing for the starting job, with Kelley entering the third role as a solid favorite with Chris Thompson. The fourth, running back on the depth chart, is the one that needs to be sorted out. Are you deciding between Byron Marshall and Kapri Bibbs, both of whom have similar abilities as Thompson? Or are they, like Kelley and Perine, trying to retrieve another first-and-second-down, either through a trade or via the waiver cable?
Whether it's Alex Smith and his receiver against another defense to look a little different from the running back position, or to see which broad receiver and inside linebacker in their bid to raise to the roster It should be an entertaining few days with the jets.
Look for my practice reports, which start today at around 1
