Steele, 36, has been with Xavier for 10 years, including the last two as an associate head coach. He worked under Mack for nine years.
"When we completed our national search process, it became clear that the best head coach of our program was the one we knew best, Travis Steele," athletic director Greg Christopher said. "Travis has influenced the Xavier basketball program in a variety of ways during his time at Xavier, be it in the office, on the court or recruiting Travis brings passion, personality and organizational leadership to our head coaching position, which is truly the CEO of our basketball program He has earned a reputation as one of the brightest young offensive fighters in the game and one of the future stars in the profession. "
Before joining Xavier, Steele spent two seasons in Indiana and one season at Wabash Valley College. The native Indiana has close relationships in the Midwest, including several seasons working with AAU and high school programs.
"I'm excited about the opportunity to build on the success of Xavier's basketball program," Steele said. "I want to thank the Xavier administration and all those involved in the search process, especially Greg Christopher."
With Steele at the staff, Xavier went to nine NCAA tournaments and five Sweet 1
Steele replaces Mack, who went to Louisville for a vacancy earlier this week.
