Xbox Gamertags are updated today to support new alphabets and duplicate names. The Xbox App for PC and Xbox Game Bar update will be available on mobile devices and consoles from next year.
Duplicate name support does not mean that someone can choose the same name as you, end of story. It is more complicated. It means that if someone chooses a name that is already taken, they can use it, but with a hashtag number attached to the end. This number is discrete as Battle.net treats it on the PC.
Also note: Your existing Gamertag is safe. You do not have to do anything to keep it the way it is unique to you. Nobody can steal it and no suffix will be stamped on your name. However, if you change it, someone might claim your old gamertag.
The new alphabets supported by Xbox Gamertags are:
- Basic Latin
- Latin-1 Supplement
- CJK Symbols for languages in China, Japan and Korea
- 19659007] Bengali
"This is the first step in the evolution of gamertags," says Microsoft on the Xbox website. Thank you for your patience as the team implemented new features based on your feedback. If you have any idea how to further improve gamertags, visit the Xbox Idea Hub and let us know. "
