Xbox One losing drive for the next model; Next generation consoles and other rumor summaries

About three months before the E3 2019, the rumors about Xbox are already heating up. Microsoft has previously confirmed that several new Xbox consoles are up and running, and now its plans seem to be in focus.

There is a lot of information about the new Xbox consoles, so we summarize all the rumors and speculation in this post to understand the matter. Keep in mind that the sources for each rumor have proven reliable in the past, but all that is mentioned here is unconfirmed. As with all rumors, the plans may change. With this restriction out of the way …

A Disc-free Xbox One

Having been rumored for many months and discussed for years on a conceptual level, the disc-free Xbox One is supposed to have the code name Xbox Maverick. Windows Central has reported that this system is actually called "Xbox One S All-Digital Edition." Pre-orders for the console are expected to open in April, the console will then come to market in May worldwide.

This would be a first for Microsoft, since all previous Xbox devices were equipped with a drive. Prices have not been mentioned yet, but dropping the drive would probably cut costs. It is assumed that the Xbox One without discs is the cheapest Xbox One offer so far.

At this stage, it is unclear whether the Xbox One without a disc contains any other changes to the Xbox One hardware or design. WindowsCentral has released a Photoshop mockup, what an Xbox One without a drive could look like ̵

The video game industry, such as film, television, and music before that, is increasingly moving toward digital space and away from physical media. Microsoft itself is pushing into the digital space with the new streaming service Project xCloud, which will enter a test phase this year, according to Brad Sams. Another Microsoft digital subscription service, the Xbox Game Pass, is already popular with millions of users. It's clear that digital is important for the future.

An attempt was already made to develop completely digital hardware when Sony released the PSP Go 2009 – but it failed. It's been a decade since this process, and the general availability and speed of the Internet has improved since then. However, in some parts of the world access to the Internet is limited and in other places the speed is not that high (hello, Australia!). For those who prefer physical media, Microsoft will continue to make Xbox One consoles with drives, so you do not have to worry about the future being fully digital, at least not yet.

The Disc-To-Digital Program

A key component of Microsoft's Disc-free Xbox One plans is what is known as a "Disc-to-Digital" program. As part of this, users can exchange their console disks for already purchased games for a digital license. It is expected that the disc-to-digital program will start around the same time as the release of the Xbox One console with disc start in May or slightly earlier, Brad Sams reported. Users can visit the Microsoft Store and Best Buy (and possibly others) to exchange their media for digital licenses. The details of how this will work remain unclear.

Retailers may not be very happy with this news, especially GameStop, whose "buy sell trade" business model depends on physical media. But nobody asks the players to take care of the health of the retailers. If so, retailers need to adjust. GameStop has recently diversified its offerings to focus more on digital options and physical content such as Funko Pop. toys and other physical goods.

A New Fortnite Xbox One

Microsoft already offers an Xbox One bundle of hardware that ships with Fortnite and various extras. However, the company plans to push the Battle Royale even further game. According to Windows Central, a new Xbox One with a Fortnite inspired design will hit the market. However, the site had no other information about the system and whether it is an Xbox One S, X or the new disc-free edition

Next-Gen consoles

Microsoft has reportedly working on several new Xbox One consoles, under development "Scarlett". The first is codenamed Anaconda according to Brad Sams, and is the new high-performance Xbox One that follows the Xbox One X, which was released in November 2017. The other, code name Lockhart It is said that this is the budget-oriented offer.

At the E3 2019 in June, Microsoft is expected to discuss both consoles, although it is still unclear how the company will proceed at the moment. Sams said Microsoft's idea with the new consoles was to "make next-gen gaming available to a wider audience with lower entry prices." The consoles are not expected to hit the market before fall 2020.

According to Sams, the price of the Anaconda console is set in line with Sony's PlayStation 5 (which has not yet been announced), while Lockhart's less specifications are not known for Anaconda and Lockhart, but Sams reports that both Consoles will feature solid state storage, which is a big improvement over the Xbox One X hard drive.

Sam speculates that the specifications for the new console wave are probably not as important as the Xbox One X, a console that can already deliver 4K / 60FPS games. He suggests that the most important change will be on the software side. A new technology called GameCore OS will enable Microsoft to bring the development of Xbox One and PC closer together.

According to Sams, Microsoft may try to launch GameCore OS on all Xbox One family devices. However, it is not yet known at this time whether this will unlock the function referred to by Sam as "true forward and backward compatibility".

Microsoft wants to push more into the PC development space (Halo Infinite comes on Xbox One and PC). Does this affect Microsoft's ability to sell consoles? As Sam reminds us, money is earned on games – not on hardware. The margin profile of game sales is known to be better than that of hardware, where margins in some cases are low or absent in history.

"There you do not make money," Phil Spencer told GeekWire about consoles. "The business within games is the sale of games selling games and content by such means is the basic business, so if you open the game, people can play more often, the more enjoyment of the art form increases its size The Enterprise. "

xCloud and Game Pass

One of Microsoft's most exciting and ambitious new technologies is the Project xCloud game streaming service. Microsoft's long-term vision is to bring the Xbox to any Internet-connected screen, whether it's a TV, a console or a cell phone in your pocket. According to Sams, xCloud – or whatever Microsoft decides – will enter the testing phase this year. Xbox boss Phil Spencer said he was already playing streaming games on his mobile phone during his vacation trips in late 2018, so it's definitely coming together.

Nothing is certain yet, but it's not hard to imagine a future where Xbox Game Pass will become an xCloud offering where players can stream games wherever they are, on which device they are are currently located. It's exciting to think about it. However, there are many unanswered questions about whether the service is available worldwide (in particular, PlayStation Now is not available in Australia) and whether Xbox Live Gold is required or not. Whatever the case, it may be time for streaming to begin as Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Verizon, and other tech Juggernauts choose to run game streaming services in the pipeline.

Next Steps

Brad Sams reports that Microsoft will discuss its next generation plans with partners at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco later this month. The show is aimed at developers and business people. Whether these discussions take place behind closed doors or not, remains to be seen. At the E3 Consumer Show in June, the company is reported to officially unveil the new consoles and discuss its plans at a high level.

What are you hoping for from Microsoft for the next generation of consoles? Let us know in the comments!
