We are big fans of the Android One-powered Xiaomi Mi A1 here at AP. Its combination of attractive design, world-class software, outstanding performance and solid battery life makes it one of the best budget phones ever (even though it's not officially sold in the US). The phone received Android 8.0 Oreo just before the launch of 2018, but so far it has been enough for 8.1 Oreo. Unfortunately, it comes with two pretty big bugs.
The 8.1 update comes with the June security patch and weighs about 1.15 GB. Interestingly, Android 8.1 Oreo is not mentioned in the description of the update, but look at the screenshots before and after the update. Compared to 8.0, 8.1 brings some minor changes to the user interface for the Power menu, an updated launcher, a SystemUI design that adapts to the color of the background, and a battery indicator for connected Bluetooth devices. The update also reportedly improves the phone's sound quality.

Unfortunately, many Mi A1 owners report that their SMS history is deleted after the update. The deletion appears to occur after the news app has been removed in the latest news. If you think about it, we recommend that you back up your text messages via an app such as SMS Backup & Restore. The update also leads to the failure of SafetyNet, which is worrisome. We'll keep you updated when Xiaomi does something about these bugs.
