NEW YORK (AP) – The Yankees have ceased using Kate Smith's recording of "God Bless America" during the seventh inning track while investigating a racist allegation against the singer.
The New York Daily News reported Thursday that there are conflicting claims about Smith's song "That's Why Darkies Were Born" (1939). The song was created in 1931 in the Broadway revue "George White Scandals" and was considered a satire. It was recorded by Smith and also by Paul Robeson, who was black.
The team said in a statement, "The Yankees have been alerted to an unknown recording and have decided to check it immediately and carefully." The Yankees take social, racial, and cultural insensitivities very seriously, and yet they are not final We're mistaken on the side of sensitivity. "
