Microsoft Xbox owners will be confused when they learn that people have been listening to some of their voice commands. Motherboard recently spoke to a number of Microsoft contractors who said that they had been asked by the company to review the voice commands for Xbox and Cortana to improve the technology. This is the same thing that has happened to all types of language assistants lately, but this is no less worrying.
This latest report follows an earlier motherboard report on hiring Microsoft contractors to listen to Skype recordings. It sounds like a similar team has been recruited to check Xbox recordings to train the software that controls the voice control features. One contractor said that "most of the voices they heard came from children." That's creepy. The technology that supports voice control and voice assistants only requires user verification to make improvements. It is also very clear that the companies that develop this technology have done a terrible job of communicating this human commitment to users.
