There's probably no other feature YouTube Music labels more often than missing support for Android Auto. Sure, you can manually start and control the app on your phone while connected to the car to get music. However, this is clearly not what people are asking for. A few months ago apk was given hints for support in the car, but this promise was finally fulfilled. Since version 3.03, you can now use YouTube Music directly from the Android Auto interface.
Android Auto Support
As with any other music player on Android Auto, you can switch to YouTube Music by opening the Music tab and tapping a button a second time on the button to open the source selector. Unfortunately, because the list is sorted alphabetically, YouTube Music will appear at the bottom of the list. You will probably find them on the second or third page of the apps. Until you select it, it will stay up until another app is displayed.
The navigation menu contains five options: Your Mixtape, Recommended, Recently Played, Library, and Downloads. By default, you will be added to the list of recommendations unless you have already played something.
YouTube Music is not organized in the same strict genres as Google Play Music, so you will not find the default categories in the recommended list. Everything here is either the general pool of referrals or automatically generated playlists based on your listening habits. As you would expect, the standard lists include popular genres – let's be honest: if your taste in music does not match any of these lists, then it probably does not match any genre in Google Play Music. Top: Recommended categories and sublists. Below: Library and download pages.
And for those who run Android Auto in stand-alone mode (just on a phone), here are some settings from the "Recommended" list and the player screens.
There are many more features in Google Play Music that are missing from YouTube Music. For many people, support for Android Auto was one of the last important features on the list before switching. Whether or not we see some of the others is still questionable, but we'll keep an eye out for others.
The APK is signed by Google and updates your existing app. The cryptographic signature guarantees that the file can be safely installed and has not been tampered with. Instead of waiting for Google to download this download to your devices, which can take days, just download and install it like any other APK.
